Career Pivots

I started in mechanical test engineering, transitioned into embedded software development, moved into systems engineering, and eventually led a team of engineers. Along the way I sat on hiring panels, reviewed hundreds of resumes, and learned firsthand what actually gets engineers noticed — and what gets them filtered out.

My Story

I grew up in the Midwest. Engineering felt like a stable path, I was decent at math, so I went for it. I got my bachelor's and master's in Mechanical Engineering at Iowa State and picked up a Systems Engineering certificate from Caltech.

But when it came time to actually land a job — nobody taught me how. I didn't have a 4.0 GPA to fall back on. I didn't have a ton of internship experience. I didn't have a mentor showing me the ropes. I was sending out the same resume to every job posting and hearing nothing back.

Eventually I figured out what was working and what wasn't. I stopped blasting out generic applications and started being strategic — tailoring my resume for each role, quantifying my experience with real numbers instead of adjectives, and building relationships with people who could actually refer me.

That's how I landed at John Deere. And once I was inside, I spent 8 years learning the rest of the game — how to get promoted, how to pivot between disciplines, and eventually how to hire and manage engineers myself.

Why I Coach

I remember what it felt like to be in that spot — sending out applications, hearing nothing back, watching classmates get offers while I was stuck. The financial stress, the self-doubt, the feeling of "what am I doing wrong?"

I also remember what it felt like to finally land that role. The relief. Being able to provide for myself and my family. That weight just lifting.

I started coaching because I kept seeing engineers go through the exact same struggle I went through — and making the same mistakes I made. I figured if I could help people skip the trial-and-error phase and get to the result faster, that was worth doing.

If you're tired of repeating what you already know doesn't work, try something that does.

Give me 21 days and let me help you land a top tier engineering role that you are excited about.
